Stuttering is a complex speech impediment that often has concomitant anxiety and avoidance behaviors associated with it. Proper diagnostics and a holistic therapy approach are required to nurture lasting improvements. This program will offer insights into differential diagnosis and an introduction to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety. Participants will learn strategies for rate control, fluency shaping, oral reading, and for controlling stuttering. Proper collaboration with parents and educators will also be a feature.
At the conclusion of this workshop, the learner will be able to:
1) Demonstrate proper easy onset and pull-out fluency strategies
2) List 3 techniques for enhancing fluency in oral reading
3) ldentify 4 of the most common cognitive distortions that lead to anxiety in children who stutter (cws)

Tim Mackesey, CCC-SLP, BCS-F is owner of Atlanta Area Stuttering Specialists- a full-time private practice dedicated to fluency disorders. Tim has been a licensed SLP since 1992. He is formally recognized as a Board Certified Specialist in Fluency Disorders (BCS-F) and a Specialist Mentor by ASHA. Georgia Speech and Hearing Association (GSHA) honored Tim with the Jack Bess Memorial Award and he later served as President of GSHA.
Tim is regularly invited to present professional workshops on early intervention, stuttering therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). He created the F.A.S.T. Fluency program; a cutting-edge preschool stuttering program. Tim has published several articles in peer-reviewed professional journals. Tim has been interviewed on a number of television and radio programs related to stuttering. Tim has been an expert witness in litigation that involves stuttering. Tim has taught the graduate-level Fluency Disorders course at Georgia State University. Tim is founder of Raise Your Voice, lnc., a non-profit that is dedicated to advocacy for PWS.
